Why I am doing Mission Year
Well first i’m doing mission year because i’m crazy. But really because God has asked me to love him and love people. Also He has asked us as his followers to do what He’s doing and did. And when Jesus was on earth He hung out with people who really needed his love, so thats what i want to do. I want to learn to love like God loves and Mission Year seems like is an awesome opportunity to do that.
About Mission Year
Mission Year is a year long urban ministry program focused on Christian service and discipleship. We take teams of young people, place them in an area of need, and help them to serve people and create community. We are committed to the command of Jesus to “love God and love people,” by placing the needs of our neighbors first and developing committed disciples of Christ with a heart for the poor. News from Camden=) / Sep 28, 12:35 PM
I’ve been in Camden about 2 weeks now! We’ve been staying at Urban Promise Campus… (a private school and afterschool program) while we’ve been looking for a house… but now we have found one=) and will be moving in on monday! The city is intense, its real and its really hard to describe to anyone what is going on or what its like here to anyone who isn’t here.
I wrote this poem after the 2nd visit to our neighborhood and was struggling w/ culture shock of it all.
In a place where icecream trucks dont just sell icecream,
how can i relate?
when my skin color says i want dop,
what has gone wrong?
How can i be relevant?
The brokenness and hopelessness overwelms me,
yet kids still smile,
the church has a good reputation and is alive!
God is at work let us join him!
God is really showing me that what i have said i believe means sometime new here in the city… when you have seen real hopelessness than hope for the hopeless means so much more.
Thank you for all your prayers! I miss you all and would love to hear from everyone!

Thoughts / Aug 12, 10:05 AM
This was written yesterday while in the Aderondacks:
As i sit here on a huge rock overlooking a calm lake its hard to believe that in less than a month I’ll be in the inner city. I felt the same way sitting under a tent all summer in the middle of a field selling organic strawberries to earthy crunchy people. It seems worlds away from Camden. Part of me screams “what are you doing you’re a country girl?” Yet despite my questions and fears I KNOW this is what God has for me. And I am excited for it. Talking to my friend Charels, who’s an Alumni of Mission Year, he encouaraged me that “The joy that comes from helping people shadows the joy that comes from doing things you like.” And this i know to be true in the limited experiance i have.
God may you be my joy and may I have joy in doing your work.
