And it all begins...
I’m Lindsay, and I am so excited about the next year of my life. I will graduate from the University of South Carolina in August, and then off to Wilmington, Delaware! There are so many uncertainties at this point in life. Every one seems to ask the question, what will you be doing when you graduate? Well… I don’t have a 5 year plan, or anything close to it. What I do know, is that Jesus has changed my life. He has opened and closed doors over the past few years that have now led me to this point. I know I want to serve Him with all that I am, and to do that now, I am going to Delaware to serve on Mission Year.
Mission Year’s motto is “Love God. Love People. Nothing else matters.” Well – I think that about sums it all up. This is life. In Mark 12, someone asks Jesus what the greatest commandment is. He responds with, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” Six followers of Christ are about to spend a year living in community, loving our neighbors, loving each other, loving the church, and fighting for justice in the city of Wilmington. I cannot wait to learn, along with these people, how to follow those commandments well. To live out our calling as followers of Christ.
One thing the Lord has shown me is that my life is not my own. My time is not my own. This concept is SO opposite from the society we live in. Society teaches to fight for yourself, work for success to have a better life for yourself. Yet Jesus tells us different. He came to earth in human form, made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, and humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Phil 2). And now, the calling on my life is to follow Him.
Obedience in my life right now is to go to Delaware. To serve his people there. Mother Teresa said, “Following Jesus is simple, but not easy. Love until it hurts, and then love more.” I know this year is going to be great, but I also know along with the good times come hard times. I want this to be my heart: to love until it hurts, and more. To serve until it hurts, and more.
Above all, I pray that the Lord would be glorified through this year in my life and through the lives of all of the members of my team. That beautiful relationships would be built, that hearts would be changed, that injustices would be recognized and acted upon, and that we would run this part of the race well. I am filled with anticipation to see what is in store for all of us. So Wilmington, Delaware, here we come!
About Mission Year
Mission Year is a year long urban ministry program focused on Christian service and discipleship. We take teams of young people, place them in an area of need, and help them to serve people and create community. We are committed to the command of Jesus to “love God and love people,” by placing the needs of our neighbors first and developing committed disciples of Christ with a heart for the poor.
