Why I'm Doing Mission Year

Hello All!! Welcome to my Mission Year blog! For those of you who don’t know I will be moving to Philidelphia in September to be apart of a program called Mission Year. For this year I will be living in the city doing community service and through relationships that I build, sharing the love of Jesus.

My decision to join the Mission Year team was not really my decision. God put in motion a series of events that led me to first hear about Mission Year, then put a longing in my heart to be apart of the program. I really believe that this is just going to be a stepping stool for what God is going to do in my life further down the road. What that will be, I don’t know. But I know it’s all up to Him, I’m just along for the ride.

About Mission Year

Mission Year is a year long urban ministry program focused on Christian service and discipleship. We take teams of young people, place them in an area of need, and help them to serve people and create community. We are committed to the command of Jesus to “love God and love people,” by placing the needs of our neighbors first and developing committed disciples of Christ with a heart for the poor. Oh my! / Feb 5, 03:28 PM

So a couple weeks ago i kinda messed up my knee. I had to go the the emergency room last week and they told me that I tore my lateral meniscus. It has something to do with the soft tissue unde the knee cap. I have an appointment with a knee doctor next week. So im just asking for prayer that its nothing serious and something that time can heal.

we have had a few more problems with the house. our ceiling is caving in in the front room. there is also some very pretty mold that is growing there. Anna has been very persistant in callin our landlord and letting him know that there is a problem. he has been by to look at and assures us somone is coming soon to fix it.

And since the beggining of the year there has been a mysterious dripping sound that we couldnt find the source of. well we finally found it. we believe it is our bathroom sink, which is upstairs. it is currently leaking from our ceiling in the dining room. this just happened last night so im sure the landlord will be called today. in the house we keep havin discussions of what would happen if our bathroom fell through the floor into our dining room. the discussions are very amusing but at the same time a little scary to think about.

it really does make you think about the people whos lives are permanently rooted here. they go through this all the time. im only here for a year and im complaining. i have no right to. i pray that God will use the way i feel about our house and use it to help me love the people who have come into my life a little more.

lots of love ,
Rori

Tony / Jan 9, 03:41 PM

Hey, I want yall to check out Matt Roark’s lastest blog. Our team met a guy by the name of Tony the first couple weeks we were here. I had visited with him with other team mates a couple times. He owned a little store really close to our house. Well, through circumstances that we arent quite sure of, Tony got shot and died a few weeks ago. Ive been sturggling with whether or not to write about it. But since Matt did, I thought that I might as well also.

I dont really know what else to say about it. If you have questions about it, just ask me.

Also check out the comments on matt’s blog entry. Tony’s son left a comment as well as a friend of his. It really touches my heart.

Its going to be tough / Jan 9, 03:38 PM

So im back in philly. Its been a lot harder coming back here than i thought it would be. I dont really know how to put in words why its been hard. Some of it has to do with leaving a couple of really important people back home. And the rest of it is just indescribable. So im just asking for prayer. Pray that God will help me cope with being here. I dont really know what will make the rest of this year easier. Maybe its not suppose to be easy at all. Thats probably what it is.

Thats all I really have to say right now. Ill write more soon. I promise.

Ill see you all in a couple weeks!! / Dec 4, 02:25 PM

Ok guys, I know I havent writtin in a long time. Mom was yelling at me yesterday because of it.

I really dont know what to say. We had a great Thanksgiving. For lunch we went to Ms. Goodwins and Carmen’s house. Food was awesome. We got to watch some of the dog show which made me feel like I was at home. Then later on that day we went to The Clarke’s house. Once again, Dinner was AMAZING. We had BBQ ribs and turkey! And both dinners served mac and cheese. I was a happy woman.

The day after Thanksgiving we participated in a thing called Buy Nothing Day put on by The UsAnti-heros. It was so much fun. The day after thanksgiving is known as Black Friday because of all the money that is spent on material iteams. Being a part of Mission Year we are learing to live a simplistic lifestyle. So on that day went to the mall in downtown philly and stood outside of it and passed out flyers on consumerism and debt in america and gave away free hot chocolate. Some people also dressed up in ridiculous costumes.
Go to the website below for a little video of last years festivities.

Lots of Love!!
