I am a true believer that all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord. I also like to refer to my life as a giant puzzle that only God sees the full picture to. I have always believed that God sees the bigger picture therefore I should trust him will all the pieces to my life.
This August I will be packing my bags and moving down to Hot-Laaaannta (Atlanta, GA)! I was so excited to finally know where I was going to serve during my time in Mission Year. I began looking for blogs where people served and are serving in Atlanta to have a glimpse of how what to “expect.” I put expect in quotations because I do know everyones experience is different and my own experience will be different to others.
By reading the blogs, I noticed that Atlanta struggles a lot with their school system something that is dear to my heart because knowledge is power. A while ago in my Church there was a 9 year old girl who couldn’t read to her grade level so her mom asked me if I could practice with her daughter because she couldn’t speak English. I immediately said yes, so every Saturday her daughter would come to my house to read and we would spend time together. Her reading comprehension was in really bad shape, I had to get books with one sentence a page. Since then her school finally did something to help the girl and her mother. I was so happy that she finally got the help she needed. But that is not always the case with other school systems like in Atlanta.
Why I tell this story? Because I grew up in a city that was looked down upon many people. Springfield, VA is predominantly Hispanic but there is a lot of cultural diversity. My High School was one of the most racially diverse schools in the county. But, whenever I told people the High School I went to I got the same question “Isn’t that school very ghetto or something.” People sold drugs in my neighborhood, I have lived in roach infested places, I have lived in rat infested places, I have lived in a broken home, my sister and I have asked our neighbor for milk, eggs or sugar because we didn’t have any, I have lived in a single parents home.
When I told my home Church I was doing Mission Year I was worried they were going to ask me “why do you have to go over there to do the work you are already doing here?” But they didn’t ask me that, I asked myself that question. After asking God how do I answer my own question he said “All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord.” It clicked, it’s better to know how it feels then to hear how something feels. He knew all along what he wanted to do.
